Pretending

Earlier this evening I sat at my desk and saw, next to my box of tissues, something that I had not put there. A plastic phone. This phone has buttons and push button numbers and used to have a curly wire connecting the receiver to the base. It's old
Like, from the early 1990's.

I said, "What's this doing here?"

Rebecca, my 14-year-old who was sitting nearby, said, "Bridget was pretending she was my secretary."
There was no *oh, isn't that cute* in her tone, there was no smirk or annoyed sigh. Because...that's just Bridget. She does that.

Shhh...don't tell anyone but Bridget still loves to play and pretend and be a little kid in general.
BUT YOU HAVE TO PROMISE NOT TO TELL ANY OF HER FRIENDS!
Because you see, she is 12. In 7th grade.

I know it won't be too much longer--maybe a year if I'm lucky--that it will occur to Bridget to pretend. I'm really going to miss it--she can make a game out of a roll of toilet paper and do any number of voices for every, single plastic animal in the giant basket in her room. As pretenders go, Bridgie is one of the greats.

She hopes to be the next Betty White. I betcha Betty was still playing secretary when she was 12.

  1. Only my daughter plays make believe, and not very often at that. But I don't remember the boys playing make believe at all.

  2. Play-and-pretend should be an ageless activity, IMO. Yay Bridget for still embracing it!

  3. Betty White's a pretty cool role model. I pretended while I played well into middle school as well. It's a sign of an active imagination.
